The Dire Wolf, larger and more ancient than its modern descendants, held a special place in the imagination of northern peoples. It was seen as a spirit of the underworld and the wilderness, a guide between realms — much like the shamanic seiðr practitioners who walked between the worlds of men and gods.
Viking warriors, the wolf was a sacred totem — an emblem of courage and brotherhood. Many berserkers, the elite fighters of the North, were known as ulfhéðnar, meaning “wolf-coated men.” These warriors entered battle in a trance-like fury, believing themselves possessed by the spirit of the wolf.
